This year I’m buying new Christmas decorations.

Just a few things. I fact, I do this every year. I buy a few items to add to my existing collection. Many of the decorations I have are thrifted over the years, or bought second hand off of marketplace. Currently I’m hunting for a Christmas village, something vintage with that cozy 90s vibe I love so much. I will definitely show you if I hit the jackpot on one!

So far this year I bought some new garland and some curtains that definitely feel more festive than the beautiful springy blue ones Emily made for me. Those will go back up after Christmas is over.

But today I am starting slowly with decorating. I’m just swapping out the curtains. I am not sure where my existing decorations will fit into our new house, and since I’m a total creature of habit, everything goes in the same spot year after year. So this year, in our new house, I’m giving myself time to figure it all out, even if I’m usually completely decorated for Christmas by this time of year.

Yes, I am an early decorator— you caught me.

I know I will want to buy some new decorations to make this house feel like home, but I plan to get as much as I can second hand. There is something extra special about preloved Christmas decorations. It’s like they have magic built in. Maybe it’s because you have to hunt for them or maybe because other families have enjoyed them before you and a little Christmas magic clings to each item every time they are packed away.

Whatever the reason, I hope my kids grow up remembering the collection of Christmas items I spent years building. Something’s old, something’s new, but all a part of the backdrop of their childhood christmas memories.
